The Harvard Dental Alumni for the Advancement of Orthodontics was established in 2020 to continue the mission of the previous alumni group, the HSAO (Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics). The objective of this SIG of Harvard University shall be to further the study and advancement of orthodontics through education, research, and fellowship, emphasizing the continuous review of the state of orthodontic education, research, and delivery of treatment. 

Our Mission & Goals

The overarching goals of the HDAAO are to seek knowledge in our field and to promote camaraderie within our specialty, especially for those who identify with the Harvard Postdoctoral Orthodontics Program. PRESIDENT

Dr. Manny Lamichane, DDS, MMSc

Manish Lamichane obtained a DDS from the University of Toronto in 1999, where he served as class president, won awards from the Canadian Dental Association and the Ontario Dental Association, and was inducted into the dental honour society Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Dr. Lamichane then completed a General Practice Residency at the Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals in Boston, MA and was awarded top resident of his class. After graduating with an MMSc in Orthodontics from Harvard University, he started in private practice in Lancaster, PA in 2007 operating a multi-location group practice called LOA Orthodontics. Dr. Lamichane is a lecturer at HSDM teaching practice management and case-based digital Orthodontics and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Hershey Medical School. He has also lectured on the topics of digital orthodontics, 3D treatment planning and solving complex cases using aligners. He has sat on the Clinical and Faculty Advisory boards at OraMetrix and the Board of Directors at the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, where he has also provided clinical care to patients with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial syndromes. Dr. Lamichane has served as Vice President and President of both the Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics (now known as the Harvard Dental Alumni for the Advancement of Orthodontics) and also the Lancaster County Dental Society.

UNIVERSITY VICE PRESIDENT

Dr. Mohamed Masoud

Dr. Mohamed (Moe) Masoud was born in Fairfax VA in 1979, and completed his orthodontic specialty training and doctorate degree at The Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2007.  Dr. Masoud was awarded the prestigious Harry Sicher award by the American Association of Orthodontics, and the Joseph Henry Award for clinical and research excellence by Harvard.  He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and has served as a clinical examiner for the Board. In addition to maintaining a private practice, Dr. Masoud has served as the orthodontic clinic director at the Boston University, Henry M Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and the Director of Graduate Orthodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. His work on growth prediction and 3D facial imaging has been published and presented at national and international meetings.  His current research focuses on 3D facial imaging, sleep apnea, and expanding the use of clear aligners to treat problems with jaw size including cases that require jaw surgery. In 2018, he won the Invisalignâ challenge in the teen category, and two of his cases have been awarded 1st and 2nd place in the multidisciplinary category at the 2020 Invisalignâ University challenge. In his free time he enjoys Squash, snowboarding, underwater photography, and water color painting

VICE PRESIDENT

Dr. James Hartsfield

Following graduation from the U. of South Carolina James “Jim” Kennedy Hartsfield, Jr., received his DMD from the Medical U. of South Carolina in 1981. Professor Hartsfield then completed a clinical genetics residency and a MS in medical genetics from the Indiana U. School of Medicine; an orthodontics residency from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Forsyth Dental Center, a MMSc from the Harvard School of Medicine, and a Pediatrics Research Fellowship certificate from the Massachusetts General Hospital. Subsequently at the U. of South Florida College of Medicine he completed a clinical genetics residency, joined the pediatrics/genetics faculty, and completed a PhD in medical sciences.

 

Professor Hartsfield is a Founding Fellow in the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon and the Pierre Fauchard Academy dental honor societies. Professor Hartsfield is a former President of the International Association of Dental Research Craniofacial Biology section, and a former President of the Midwest component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists.

 

Professor Hartsfield is the E. Preston Hicks Endowed Professor of Orthodontics and Oral Health Research at the U. of Kentucky College of Dentistry, Adjunct Professor in Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at the Indiana U. School of Medicine, Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the U. of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, Clinical Professor in the Division of Oral Development and Behavioural Sciences at the U. of Western Australia Dental School, and Lecturer, Part-Time, in the Department of Developmental Biology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he teaches the OR629 Child Growth and Development course.

 

As a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and the American Board of Medical Genetics, Professor Hartsfield has been on the cleft lip and palate/craniofacial anomalies team at three medical centers, providing genetic diagnosis and/or orthodontic treatment.

INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT

Dr. Ahmet Keles

After graduating from Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry in 1989, Ahmet Keles started the orthodontic residency program at Harvard University in the U.S. with the scholarship. In 1994, he completed his doctorate degree, and his thesis study received The Coenraad Moorrees Research Award from Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics and The Thomas Graber Award of Special Merit given by American Association of Orthodontics. After completing his doctorate, he taught orthodontics at Marmara University. After acquisition his Associate Professorship in 2002, he served as Clinical Director of Orthodontics at University of Connecticut until 2005. Afterwards, he started teaching at Harvard University as a part time faculty. Currently, he divides his time between Istanbul, seeing patients in his private practice and in Boston teaching postgraduate students at Harvard University. He received his full Professorship from Istanbul Aydin University in 2018. Ahmet Keles has many patents bearing his name. His inventions, Keles Keyless Expander, Keles Slider and Keles Face Mask are widely used and give courses and seminars. He has authored more than 50 scientific publications and many orthodontic textbook chapters. He was the abstract and reviews editor of the World Journal of Orthodontics. He is married and have 2 children.

Dr. Virginia Bocage

Dr. Bocage’s career as an orthodontist was built on a foundation of quality education. She received her Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master’s Degree in Medical Science from Harvard University. While there, she conducted research about cephalometric analysis as part of her program requirements.

 

Dr. Bocage also earned a Certificate in Advanced General Dentistry from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. Her advanced dentistry background allows her to provide more comprehensive treatment planning and better long-term care for his patients, setting her practice apart from others in the area.

Dr. Bocage is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the Harvard Society for Advancement of Orthodontics and is also a certified Invisalign Provider. 

 

Continuing Education

Although her formal education is complete, Dr. Bocage always strives to know about the latest and most effective treatments today. As part of her continuing education, she participates in numerous study clubs and attends the annual American Association of Orthodontists meeting every year. She spends many hours studying the most effective, esthetic and comfortable treatments because of the value it gives to his patients.

TREASURER

Dr. Sal Zammitti

Dr. Zammitti graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine with a residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. In addition, he received a Master of Medical Science in Oral Biology granted by the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard and a Doctorate of Dental Medicine from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Before attending dental school, Dr. Zammitti earned a Bachelor of Science from Boston University.

 

His professional memberships include the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, Southern Association of Orthodontists, and the North Carolina Dental Society. Dr. Zammitti has developed additional skills and experience in clinical care and staff and patient relations. He has extensive continuing education, including studies at the Charles H. Tweed International Foundation of Orthodontics and Advanced Edgewise Mechanics in Tucson, Arizona, and Peter E. Dawson Occlusion and TMD seminars. He has published a number of articles in dental journals and has a special interest in facial aesthetics.

 

In addition to his excellent credentials, Dr. Zammitti is a people person who relates well to people of all ages and loves to see his patients smile. He prides himself on his caring relationships with patients. Dr. Zammitti, who is fluent in Italian, enjoys the quality of life and warm climate in North Carolina and currently lives in Mooresville, NC. Dr. Zammitti has three children. Jessica is in dental school at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and was married on May 2, 2021. Melissa is an RA at Brown University and continuing her education and running career at UConn. Mitchell, a senior in high school, also has aspirations of becoming a dentist. Dr. Zammitti enjoys activities with his family and friends, as well as fishing, tennis, and skiing.

DIRECTOR

Dr. Todd Walkow, DMD, MS

Dr. Walkow graduated with honors from the orthodontic residency program at Harvard University. While at Harvard, he received his Master of Science in Epidemiology from the Public Health School. Dr. Walkow received his dental degree from Tufts University in 1996. As a student at Tufts, he served as class president for four consecutive terms. At graduation Dr. Walkow received the honor of delivering the class address and was awarded certificates of merit from the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the Robert R Andrews Honor Society, and the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.

 

Dr Walkow takes an active role in meeting and exceeding the standards of his profession by serving on the Board of Directors for the California Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO). Dr Walkow also a Past President of the California Association of Orthodontists CAO has also served as a regional delegate to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) for 4 years.

 

Dr. Walkow is strongly committed to his community where he has served on the Board of Trustees at Harbor Day School and the Board of Directors of Big Brothers of Orange County. Dr Walkow has also actively supported and volunteered his time with charitable organizations such as Human Options and Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC).

 

Dr. Walkow specializes in orthodontic treatment for both children and adults. He is also a specialist in treating advanced bite issues and problems with the jaws and is a leading provider of Surgical Orthodontics.  Dr Walkow is a local expert in Invisalign and Invisalign Teen providing treatment to patients throughout the Newport Beach area, and was the first doctor in Orange County to treat over 1000 cases. Dr. Walkow has also lectured for Invisalign and served on the clinical evaluation committee for multiple companies.

 

A native of Southern California, he attended the University of California Irvine and currently resides in Newport Beach with his children. Dr. Walkow is an avid athlete who enjoys swimming, running, hiking, surfing, and cycling.
